Elpidia SaavedraMayor of Toppenish
Born and raised in the city of Toppenish by a single mom. My dad left when I was young. I have 9 siblings. 4 sisters and 5 brothers. All wonderful, productive people. We worked as farmworkers growing up, poor, on welfare, but happy. My mom, an immigrant from Mexico, loves the United States and instilled in her kids the values of loving God, family, and country. In the summer of 1998, I heard there were some council positions open in Toppenish. I felt led by God to apply, so I did and have served the City of Toppenish ever since. Then, in the Summer of 2022, a concerned parent and family member approached me with some documents about the Comprehensive Sexual Education curriculum plan to be taught to the kids in our school district. What I read and saw was deeply concerning. To me, it seemed like a blatant attack on the faith-based values of many parents, our Latino cultural values, our kid’s innocence, and mental well-being, in addition to the right of parents as a whole. I decided to get involved and help parents fight back to protect their kids and parental rights.

Sharon HanekThe Research Mom
Sharon Hanek is an accountant, community volunteer, wife, and mother who became active in the political arena when she became involved in education issues. Her “mother bear” instincts brought her into the political arena where she became known as “Research Mom”. She is the founder and director of “My Family My Choice” an organization dedicated to empowering families to advocate for their rights in the legislative arena.
In 2012 Sharon made headlines by being the first candidate to win a State-wide write-in campaign in her primary bid for the Office of State Treasurer. Although she did not win the general election, she went on to win her next race and became the Chair of the Pierce County Charter Review Commission.
Sharon has been active in her community and in the Republican Party. She has also been appointed to various commissions and boards in Pierce County including the Redistricting Commission. She currently serves as a Planning Commissioner and sits on the Executive Board of the Birth – 25 Children’s Committee.
Over the years, Sharon has been a guest on local and national radio programs. She continues to give presentations on education, activism, and the global agenda. Her “wins” include stopping universal home visitation laws, and rewriting the math standards taking Washington State from “F” rated standards to “A” rated standards. Sharon believes that citizens getting involved CAN change our state and is committed to helping others learn to be a strong voice in their community and in politics.
