Good news: After Roe v Wade, Planned Parenthood performed fewer abortions

After the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, Planned Parenthood performed 9,000 fewer abortions compared to the previous year. The organization is responsible for 40% of all abortions in the United States, and their decrease in operations is representative of the national trends surrounding abortion since the Supreme Court’s ruling.

“We are thrilled that Planned Parenthood performed more than 9,000 fewer abortions this year. This means that 9,000 more babies will have the opportunity to cry, laugh, and look into their mothers’ and fathers’ eyes. It means that over 9,000 fewer moms’ and dads’ hearts were broken by the tragedy of abortion,” Director of the Center for Human Dignity at Family Research Council Mary Szoch said. “This is something to celebrate.”

Planned Parenthood’s annual report revealed that there is still much work to be done when it comes to fighting for the right to life. While the number of overall abortions did decrease by 9,000, over 374,155 abortions were still performed over the past year, using $670.4 million in taxpayer dollars. That number is tragic and nothing to be proud of, but Planned Parenthood consistently touts it as a victory in post-Roe America.

“This was the year the worst happened. We knew it was coming. We were prepared. We had to be. Losing the constitutional right to abortion was still heartbreaking — for patients, for providers, for the communities we serve,” the annual report reads. “But we’ve faced challenges before, and we’ve never given up. We won’t start now.”

The doomsday rhetoric of pro-abortion advocates will continue until their mission is complete: unrestricted access to abortion nationwide, for women and girls of all ages and at every stage of pregnancy – even after birth. The pro-life movement must remain vigilant in fighting for the rights of the unborn, who are incapable of fighting for themselves.

“Since the Dobbs decision, compared to the average monthly number of abortions observed in the pre-Dobbs period, there were 32,260 cumulative fewer abortions from July to December,” the Society of Family Planning reported. This statistic references the total number of abortions performed in the United States, not only those registered by Planned Parenthood.

It is essential that while levels of access to abortion are still being debated in some places  pro-life advocates do not become disheartened or lose momentum. Good things are happening. Lives are being saved. Even if the battle seems insurmountable at times, every child protected from abortion is a victory worth celebrating. This year alone, the pro-life movement saved tens of thousands of unborn babies from losing their lives to abortion.
