There are no safe abortions: Washington’s stockpiling of abortion drugs amid competing judicial rulings

Amid a Texas district court judge’s ruling that froze the FDA’s approval on the abortion pills mifepristone and misoprostol, Washington’s Governor Jay Inslee made a move to stockpile 30,000 of the potentially illicit drugs, pending the federal government’s appeal to contest the ruling. Mifepristone and misoprostol have been used to abort over five million babies since it was approved by the FDA in 2000, according to the Justice Department.

At $42.50 per pill, Gov. Inslee spent a total of $1.28 million taxpayer dollars on medication to kill innocent human beings. These inexcusable actions will not be tolerated, and history will not look kindly upon those who continue to force the abortion agenda on this nation. The University of Washington also has plans to buy an additional 10,000 pills for a combined total of 40,000 pills that should last the state approximately four years.

“Washington is a pro-choice state and no Texas judge will order us otherwise,” the governor announced, determined to flout the laws of this nation when they inconvenience his agenda.

Shortly before the announcement that the state was stockpiling the abortion drugs, SB 5768, and its companion bill, HB 1854, were introduced in the WA legislature with only three weeks left in the session. These bills would allow the Washington State Department of Corrections – which has an existing pharmacy license – to acquire, sell, deliver, distribute and dispense the abortion drugs. Schemes to keep abortion drugs on the market despite court rulings have been in the works for some time, it appears.

Medicated abortions account for 60% of all abortions in Washington. If the state is forced to abide by the Texas ruling should it be enforced by the higher courts, Washington’s abortions would plummet. We urge you to pray that God would grant wisdom to the judges in the appeals court who are set to hear this case as it continues through the judicial system, with the potential of reaching the US Supreme Court.

Another factor complicating the decision in Texas is a ruling from a Washington state judge at nearly the same time that instructed the FDA to avoid taking any actions that could impact the availability of the abortion drug in the 17 Democrat states that have sued over the Texas ruling. The Biden administration is seeking clarification on which ruling should be upheld by the FDA until the cases are heard by the appeals courts.

Despite the rhetoric pushed by the left, abortion drugs are far from safe for women, with many known side effects. Mifepristone aborts infants in the womb by blocking the hormone progesterone, which stabilizes the lining of the uterus. Once the progesterone is blocked, oxygen is cut off to the embryo causing the baby to die. Misoprostol, used in combination with mifepristone, “is a synthetic steroid used to cause contractions inside the uterus and dilation of the cervix” so that the baby can be expelled from the mother’s body after it has been killed by the mifepristone. It causes heavy bleeding that can be “intense and painful” and typically lasts from 9 to 16 days.

1 in 100 women require hospitalization due to heavy bleeding caused by Misoprostol. Between 2000 and 2018, 24 women died from taking the abortion pills, 97 had ectopic pregnancies, 4,195 experienced adverse events, 1,042 were hospitalized, 599 required blood transfusions from heavy bleeding, and 418 developed infections. These pills not only end the lives of babies, they endanger the women who take them. The left does not care about the safety of women despite their lies of fighting for “safe abortions” – there are no safe abortions.

“Pregnancy is not an illness, and chemical abortion drugs don’t provide a therapeutic benefit—they end a baby’s life and they pose serious and life-threatening complications to the mother,” Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Julie Marie Blake said. “The FDA never had the authority to approve these dangerous drugs for sale. We urge the court to listen to the doctors we represent who are seeking to protect girls and women from the documented dangers of chemical abortion drugs.”
