“We are Christian business owners and leaders of for-profit and nonprofit organizations, boldly standing up for biblical values – from Capitol Hill to Wall Street to Main Street.”
— Christian Employers Alliance

A shield is the chosen symbol for Christian Employers Alliance (CEA), and that is a perfect choice because Christian businesses need protection against a government that is not always our friend and ally. In fact, every business owner knows a hard truth: The government can force you to violate your faith – and if you do not comply, you will pay the price. CEA is a shield against million-dollar lawsuits. As the voice of America’s leading Christian CEOs, they exist to defend businesses against such a threat. CEA upholds biblical values and those who wish to live out their faith in the workplace; and in a Left-leaning state such as Washington, CEA’s protection becomes even more vital. As Christians, we need to stand up against attacks to our faith, and so it is a privilege for us here at FPIW to be Strategic Partners with CEA and offer our readers some highlights of their important mission.

“Three Felonies A Day”

Our jobs are central to our lives. Often in modern society, a person may spend many more hours at work than even at their own home. Christian business owners also need protection against any vengeance or retaliation for supporting biblical values in their workplace or the public square at large, such as supporting candidates and initiatives and other events. The law can be confusing and legal ‘landmines’ exist. As CEA says, “Running a business has never been more complex. Christian employers face increasing legal, regulatory, workforce, and cultural challenges that require trusted guidance and proactive support.”

Moreover, lawfare is a sad reality in our world today — i.e., destroying a person’s livelihood with expensive lawsuits that lead to bankruptcy or financial ruin. Political retaliation is a brutal reality, and lawfare is a common method of attack. In his important book Three Felonies a Day, author Harvey A. Silverglate warns business people: “The average professional in this country wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes home, eats dinner, and then goes to sleep, unaware that he or she has likely committed several federal crimes that day. Why? The answer lies in the very nature of modern federal criminal laws, which have exploded in number but also become impossibly broad and vague.” You are vulnerable, and Christians especially need a “shield”.

Strength in Numbers to Defend Christian Ethics

CEA exists to defend Christians. Representing hundreds of member companies and 88,000 employee members, it engages a network of more than 30,000 faith-based employers across all 50 states — including many of the nation’s largest faith-based organizations. There is greater protection in a team. As CEA proclaims: “Freedom isn’t self-sustaining. Christian employers must stand together.”

In practical terms, the ethical statement of CEA is uncompromising and firmly rooted in a biblical ethic:

The Christian Employers Alliance, its officers, directors, and Members shall subscribe to these Christian Ethical Convictions:

• Human life, from the moment of conception to natural death, is sacred. Human life should be honored and protected at all stages of life.
• Abortion is the intentional taking of human life or termination of pregnancy at any time from the moment of conception through birth. Abortion is contrary to Christian Values.
• The use of human embryonic stem cells acquired from destruction of nascent human life and the use of fetal tissue acquired from abortion is contrary to Christian Values.
• Suicide and assisted suicide are contrary to Christian Values.
• Male and female are immutable realities defined by biological sex. Gender reassignment is contrary to Christian Values.
• Marriage is a lifelong, permanent, and monogamous heterosexual union.
• All people have the God-given right to exercise their faith freely, without interference from the government.
• Christians are called to exercise their faith in every area of their lives – their homes, schools, ministries, businesses, and communities.

FPIW applauds these ethical statements of truth that not only protect innocent life, but undergird the very foundations of a successful and healthy society that fears and honors God — i.e., “one nation under God.” FPIW’s vision is perfectly aligned with CEA’s forte. Our Vision Statement reads: “A state where authentic biblical values flourish and people are free to live out their faith in the workplace and community.”

The Five Freedoms

More generally, the Christian Employers Alliance exists to defend five freedoms:

• First Freedoms, such as being able to have a Bible on your desk, or hold a meeting for prayer, or decorate a business with a pro-religious theme.

• Workforce Freedom, such as choosing an applicant with strong religious views that fits one’s business culture.

• Healthcare Freedom, such as not being forced to pay for abortions, abortion pills, and transgender surgeries.

• Operational Freedom, such as keeping a business’s data private.

• Economic Freedom, such as pro-family tax reform and regulatory relief.

The attack against a business can start quietly by getting “on their radar.” Then a business will be sued by the government. Finally, the litigation to defend one’s business can be both enormously taxing on one’s time, which undercuts the probability of a business, as well as require astronomical legal fees, which can exceed hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions. No business should be “left alone” to fend for itself against an overwhelming local, state, or federal government. Businesses need protection. CEA has a track record of wins. Here is a link to a PDF with a list of their many wins. As a sample, here are two of them that feature issues also dear to FPIW, namely abortion and transgenderism:

Events

Protection is essentially about the dovetail of truth and relationships. CEA exists for both because they uphold biblical truth and they dovetail it with practical relationships with people in power. Events are one way to experience this dovetail of truth-and-relationships. CEA invites its members to “join a select group of Christian business leaders for an extraordinary advocacy experience in our nation’s capital. Last year, CEA members experienced unprecedented access to members of Congress and executive branch officials. We are replicating that high-impact environment to ensure your voice is heard where it matters most.”

CEA points out:

CEA’s integrated litigation and amicus strategy protects Christian employers on multiple fronts—practical exemptions, constitutional challenges, and structural rule-of-law defenses. Few organizations combine direct membership protections with high-impact national appellate advocacy. CEA remains steadfast in defending religious liberty in the workplace so Christian employers may boldly operate according to Biblical conviction. We are Christian business owners and leaders of for-profit and nonprofit organizations, boldly standing up for biblical values – from Capitol Hill to Wall Street to Main Street.

We need such Biblical conviction strengthened — not undermined — in Washington State. Christian CEOs should be lauded for their positive impact and for boldly operating to our communities, and their core, animating, fire of faith should never be undermined. You can protect your business by enrolling in membership to CEA and join a winning team of many thousands of businesses across the nation. Let CEA be your shield against million-dollar lawsuits.
