New research from a well-known sociology professor at the University of Virginia reveals what Christians have known all along: traditional marriage leads to a happier life, just as God intended.
“Married Americans are markedly more likely to be financially secure and almost twice as likely to be very happy with their lives compared to their single peers in the U.S.,” Professor W. Brad Wilcox noted.
Pop culture has sold a lie to the American public that marriage is restrictive and the freedom found in singleness leads to lasting happiness, but the opposite is true. Such an intimate relationship engenders happiness. In fact, Wilcox’s research showed that 40% of married mothers reported they were “very happy,” whereas only 22% of childless single women said they were happy. Further, only 13% of married women said they were “not very happy,” when 25% of single women said they were unhappy. “[Having a spouse] gives your life a sense of meaning, direction, purpose, stability, [and] helps you navigate both the highs and the lows,” Wilcox said.
Social research by way of natural reason merely confirms supernatural revelation by way of Holy Scripture. Biblically, Christians are instructed to find their purpose, joy, and direction in Christ, but we know that God created the institution of marriage to aid individuals in their pursuit of Christ. In Genesis, it is written that God saw Adam in the Garden of Eden and said: “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him” (Genesis 2:18). After God created Eve, it is written: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:14). God created marriage for His glory and our good. It is meant to edify, uplift, and paint a picture of God’s love for the body of Christ – the Church.
“The popular culture’s aversion to marriage likely has many causes, one of which is undoubtedly the loss of a theological worldview that sees marriage and family as good gifts from a creator God,” Director of Family Research Council’s Center for Biblical Worldview David Closson explained.
Today the very definition of marriage is under attack, but you can equip yourself with logical arguments in order to defend this sacred union. Here is our four-part series found online, as well as our more in-depth booklet and other resources offered below.
