Pro-Child Politics: Introducing Katy Faust’s Latest Book

Children have rights. The onus needs to be on adults to conform to the rights of children, rather than children fitting into an adult’s lifestyle.
– Katy Faust, President of Them Before Us

Katy Faust’s unique background propelled her to become one of the nation’s foremost advocates for traditional marriage and the nuclear family. Her mother and father divorced when she was just 10 years old, and while her father eventually remarried, her mother began a lesbian partnership with a woman. After being raised in a household promoting homosexuality, Katy independently came to know the Lord and converted to Christianity in adulthood. In 2012, she began an anonymous blog discussing why marriage is a matter of justice for children. In 2014, she was “outed” by a gay blogger and began writing under her own name. Ironically, this skyrocketed her platform and she was invited to speak before the United Nations, present to foreign parliaments, and submit amicus briefs to the US Supreme Court.

Today, Katy spends her time raising her four teenagers with her husband, and she also serves as the President of Them Before Us, which advances the rights and well-being of children across the globe through advocacy work. She serves on the advisory board for the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship and frequently collaborates with organizations committed to human flourishing such as Alliance Defending Freedom, Focus on the Family, the Heritage Foundation, and the Colson Center. We are proud to have Katy Faust as one of FPIW’s Strategic Partners.

Redefining Marriage

Redefining marriage can harm the proper development and maturity of children, Katy argues. It is true, she says, that “Not all marriages have children.” It is also true, however, that “Every child has parents.” If you redefine marriage, you redefine parenting; and then—ironically, in the name of so-called “compassion” toward adults—you end up harming children: you intentionally remove a natural relationship with a child’s mom or dad. A government should not say, “That is good” to something that is not good. Faust asks,

If you grew up with a relationship with a mom and a dad who loved you, my question is: Which one was optional? Which one did you not need? . . . The answer is neither. For those of you who lost a parent to death, divorce, abandonment, [or] maybe [you are] donor-conceived, how’d that go for you? Did you love it? No, because when you lose a mother or father it leaves a primal wound. . . . Now we are in a new chapter of history where for the first time government is saying, “That’s good [to lose a relationship with a parent].”

“You cannot legislate away a child’s longing for their mom and dad,” says Faust. No woman can replace a father, and no man can replace a mother. Again, both common sense and scientific research support this idea. She said her mothers could never be a father. “I needed my father. It’s the emotional food that kids need.” Children should not be “cut-and-paste” into same-sex unions. “Children have a right to be in a relationship with their mother and father whenever possible,” she says. “And as a society, we shouldn’t normalize a family structure that requires children to lose one or both parents … Children have rights. The onus needs to be on adults to conform to the rights of children, rather than children fitting into an adult’s lifestyle.”

New Book: Pro-Child Politics

Katy recently released a new book, Pro-Child Politics, which covers why a child-first approach to federal and state policies is not just a nice idea, but a necessary course of action. “Pro-Child Politics strips away the thin veneer of adult talking points to spotlight the most overlooked constituency: our children,” the book summary explains.
