Believe it or not, there are countless people who consider themselves pro-abortion in principle – saying it’s a “woman’s right to choose” – but are completely unaware of the reality of abortion. The Left has turned abortion into a political battle rather than a moral one, coming up with new terminology like “reproductive health” to soften the blow of what it means for a pregnant woman to undergo an abortion and kill her child. We are in an information war, and it’s pivotal that members of the pro-life movement remain educated in order to fight back against the misinformation with which the Left is infiltrating our culture. Below are statistics about abortion in the United States you can use to have informed discussions with other pro-lifers as well as pro-abortionists.
Since Roe v. Wade was established in 1973, over 64 million babies have been aborted in the United States, not including chemical abortions. That’s enough people to fill an entire nation the size of the United Kingdom. Let that sink in.
Liberty Council wrote that in 2020, “there were nearly 77,000 abortions per month, about 2,548 abortions per day, about 106 abortions per hour, and about one abortion every 34 seconds.”
Estimates show that in the six months following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, there were approximately 5,377 fewer abortions monthly, with an estimated total of 60,000 babies saved thanks to states with abortion restrictions in place since Dobbs was established.
For all the talking points the pro-abortion activists push in the media, they talk relatively little about who is actually having abortions, and why. But here are the statistics:
- Census data shows that white women make up 63.4% of America’s female population, and account for 33% of abortions in the US. Black women make up 12.7% of the population, but account for 38% of abortions. Hispanic women make up 21% of the population, and account for 16.2% of abortions. This makes black women 3.7 times more likely to have an abortion as opposed to white women, and Hispanic women approximately 1.8 times more likely.
- 57% of the women who have abortions in the United States are in their 20s at the time of the procedure.
- Girls under 15 years old account for less than 1% of abortions nationwide, but have the highest abortion ratio out of any demographic: 873 abortions for every 1,000 live births.
- Based on data from 2019, 86% of abortion patients are unmarried women.
- Three fourths of women who receive abortion come from low income households.
The image below clearly illustrates that while the media stresses the need for abortion due to instances like rape/incest, or saving the life of the mother, those occurrences are few and far between, and the overwhelming majority of abortions are obtained for the sake of convenience.

Almost 97% of abortions are performed because of social/economic factors such as the child being unwanted, financial instability, or the pregnant mother believing her circumstances are insurmountable. None of these reasons will ever justify the killing of another human being.
This means that almost ALL abortions in the United States take place because the mother views the baby as an inconvenience. In your discussions with pro-abortion advocates, we encourage you to bring the discussion back to this critical point. Abortion access is not necessary because countless women are endangered by pregnancy and delivery – experts clearly state that abortion is never medically necessary. Widespread access to abortion is not needed because of pregnancies that result from rape or incest – we know no baby deserves to die because of a crime committed by their father; they are no less deserving of the right to life. Every argument used by the Left to justify abortion falls short, because at the end of the day, no reason is good enough to kill an innocent child.
What it comes down to is this: very few people who are intellectually honest with empathetic capabilities can continue to justify the rampant use of abortion procedures that occurred under Roe v. Wade after being equipped with the knowledge of how gruesome and violent abortion procedures are, and after realizing that almost ALL of them are performed for the sake of “convenience” with significant threat to the mental and physical well being of the mother. We encourage you to shed light on the reality of these procedures in your conversations with friends, family and acquaintances who are pro-abortion. Speaking truth with honesty, compassion and love is far more effective than the hate-filled rhetoric we see on social media. Interpersonal conversations are the key to fighting against the Left’s culture war of misinformation.
